Earthquake-Resistant, Safe, and Rapid Dormitory Structures Using Light Gauge Steel (LGSF) Technology on Active Fault Lines

Implemented in Bingöl, one of Türkiye’s regions with the highest seismic risk, the Mixed Student Dormitory Buildings Project was carried out for the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement of the Republic of Türkiye, with Yıldızlar İnşaat A.Ş. as the main contractor. The project stands as a strategic public investment that demonstrates DORÇE’s earthquake-focused engineering approach, Design & Build model, and expertise in Light Gauge Steel Frame (LGSF) construction technologies.

With a total construction area of approximately 6,000 m², the project was completed and commissioned within a record-breaking period of just two months between October and December 2010, serving as a benchmark application where time, safety, and quality criteria were achieved simultaneously.

A Planned Integrated Dormitory Campus with Capacity for 300 Female and 300 Male Students, Suitable for All Age Groups

The Mixed Student Dormitory Buildings Project was planned with a total capacity of 300 female and 300 male students and designed to meet the accommodation, safety, and daily living needs of students from different age groups. The campus was conceived as a holistic dormitory concept that organizes female and male student areas in line with security and operational criteria, while also providing balanced living conditions through shared social spaces.

The spatial organization of the buildings was developed with flexibility to meet comfort, accessibility, and safety standards for all age groups, from younger students to university-level users. Thanks to its durable structural system, secure internal circulation areas, and planning approach suitable for long-term use, the facility offers a sustainable and safe accommodation solution for students at different stages of their educational life.

The Right Structural Technology for High Earthquake Risk Zones: Light Gauge Steel (LGSF)

In regions such as Bingöl, located on active fault lines, the selection of the structural system is not only an engineering decision but a vital safety consideration. The Light Gauge Steel Building Technology (LGSF) selected for this project minimizes structural damage risk by dissipating seismic energy through its low mass and high elasticity compared to conventional heavy construction systems. This characteristic makes LGSF the most reliable solution for projects where life safety is a priority, particularly in collective accommodation buildings such as student dormitories.

Speed and Control on Site Enabled by Ankara-Based Manufacturing Capacity

The rapid completion of the Mixed Student Dormitory Buildings Project was made possible by DORÇE’s fully integrated manufacturing infrastructure located in Ankara. All light steel structural systems and panelized building components were produced in a controlled factory environment with millimetric precision. This approach ensured consistent quality regardless of site conditions and eliminated time loss by enabling simultaneous production and on-site activities. The Ankara-based production model provides a critical advantage for rapid mobilization and safe construction in high seismic risk regions.

A Safe and Sustainable Dormitory Campus on Active Fault Lines

The mixed dormitory campus constructed within the scope of the project was planned to provide female and male students with safe, orderly, and controlled accommodation environments. In addition to structural safety, functional interior layouts, long-term usability, low maintenance requirements, and durability criteria were prioritized. Designed in accordance with Bingöl’s challenging climate conditions and seismic characteristics, the light gauge steel structural system has resulted in a permanent public facility that ensures safe use both today and in the future.

Integrated and Rapid Execution with the Design & Build Model

All design, engineering, production, and superstructure construction processes were managed by DORÇE under a single Design & Build model. This integrated approach accelerated decision-making, minimized implementation errors, and enabled effective schedule control, which is critical in public projects. Especially in high earthquake risk areas, the preference for fast and controlled construction instead of prolonged site activities played a decisive role in the project’s success.

A Reference Model for Public Buildings in Seismic Zones

The Bingöl Mixed Student Dormitory Buildings Project stands as a strong reference proving DORÇE’s capability to deliver safe, fast, and sustainable accommodation structures using light gauge steel construction technology in Türkiye’s seismic zones. The project clearly demonstrates that light gauge steel systems represent the most suitable solution for student dormitories, educational facilities, and collective accommodation buildings in geographies exposed to high seismic risk.
