A Multi-Location Modular Camp Solution for the Mining Sector, Resistant to Harsh Tropical Climate Conditions
The Simandou Iron Mine Project, one of the largest mining investments in West Africa, is located in the Simandou mountain range in the Nzérékoré Region of southeastern Guinea. With approximately 2.4 billion tons of iron ore reserves, the project is considered one of the largest iron deposits in the world. Within the scope of this project, Temporary Prefabricated Modular Worker Accommodation Camps with a total capacity of 3,500 people across 23 different locations were successfully delivered by DORÇE to meet the accommodation needs of thousands of employees working on site.
The Employer of the project is Rio Tinto Iron Ore Atlantic Limited, and the engineering firm is Fluor Corporation. Within the project scope, DORÇE assumed responsibility for engineering and supply, providing superstructure solutions for camp infrastructures distributed across a very wide geographical area.
Camp Design Adapted to Tropical Climate and Challenging Geography
Guinea is located in a tropical climate zone characterized by high temperatures, intense humidity, heavy rainfall, and difficult terrain conditions throughout the year. The modular camp structures developed for the Simandou Project were designed with:
• Material selection resistant to high humidity
• Reinforced roof and drainage systems against heavy rainfall
• Architectural solutions supporting natural ventilation
• Steel load-bearing systems protected against corrosion
These features ensure long-term, safe, and comfortable use under harsh climatic conditions.
Simultaneous Camp Implementation Across 23 Different Locations
The project, spread across 23 different points along the Simandou mountain range, has an extremely complex structure in terms of logistics and coordination. Within this scope, DORÇE developed scalable camp solutions tailored to the needs of each location by using Modular Container Units, Light Gauge Steel Structural Systems, and Pre-Engineered Heavy Steel Buildings.
• Total enclosed area: 93,748 m²
• Total project area: 4,200,000 m²
• Implementation period: March – December 2012
Thanks to the modular construction approach, camp units offered rapid installation, portability, and the ability to be relocated when required.
Solutions Provided within EPC and Supply Scope
Within the Simandou Project, DORÇE supplied and integrated the following systems and equipment:
• Electrical and mechanical installation materials
• Information and communication technology infrastructure
• Air-conditioning and centralized ventilation systems
• Thermosiphon and hot water systems
• Fire detection and fire alarm systems
• Industrial kitchen equipment
• Laundry equipment
• Furniture and living facilities
• Gym equipment
• Installation, commissioning, and spare parts support for periods of 2 years and 4 years
All systems were selected and implemented in accordance with international safety, durability, and performance standards for mining projects.
A Strong African Reference for the Mining Sector
The Simandou Iron Mine Temporary Worker Accommodation Camps Project is a strategic reference that clearly demonstrates DORÇE’s ability to:
• Develop durable building solutions for tropical climates and challenging geographies
• Successfully manage multi-location projects spread across vast areas
• Deliver fast and scalable solutions through modular and prefabricated steel building systems
• Act as a reliable solution partner for large-scale mining investments across the African continent
This project represents a strong benchmark for climate-resilient, logistically manageable, and long-lasting modular camp solutions for iron, bauxite, and precious metal mining projects in West Africa, particularly in Guinea.
