Emergency Living Settlement Established Through Rapid Response After the 2011 Van Earthquake, Prefabricated Modular Steel Container Building Solution Completed in 16 Days

Following the earthquake that occurred in Van in 2011, the Emergency Prefabricated Modular Living Units and Disaster Housing Project was implemented to meet the urgent shelter needs that emerged in the region. The project was carried out under the employer Housing Development Administration of the Republic of Türkiye (TOKİ), with Egemen Construction & Trade Ltd. acting as the main contractor. The Design & Supply and Construction processes were planned and executed in an integrated manner.

In order to provide a fast and secure shelter solution in the earthquake-affected area, prefabricated modular steel container building systems were selected for the project. Thanks to DORÇE’s production capacity, supply capability, and on-site organization strength, the project was completed and made ready for use in November 2011, within an exceptionally short period of only 16 days.

Rapid Shelter Solution with Prefabricated Modular Steel Container Buildings

Within the scope of the project, a total of 118 prefabricated modular steel container buildings, each with an area of 21 m², were designed, supplied, and installed on site for use in the disaster zone. The container buildings were planned as functional and fully equipped units to respond effectively to temporary post-earthquake accommodation needs.

The turnkey scope of works included:
• Electrical installation works
• Mechanical installation works
• Floor covering applications
• Kitchen equipment
• Heating systems

Thanks to these technical installations, the container buildings were rapidly transformed into livable, safe, and organized temporary living spaces, capable of meeting the basic daily needs of earthquake-affected residents.

Fast and Scalable Implementation Model for Disaster Zones

This project, implemented in the Van Earthquake Zone, clearly demonstrated the advantages of prefabricated modular steel container building solutions in disaster areas, including rapid installation, controlled execution, and planned settlement layout. The simultaneous execution of design, supply, and construction processes ensured that urgent shelter needs were met without delay.

Through this project, DORÇE once again proved its ability to rapidly deliver high-capacity accommodation solutions in disaster and emergency scenarios by utilizing modular steel container building systems. The project completed after the Van Earthquake stands among DORÇE’s key reference projects in the field of disaster housing and emergency living units.
